The iconic Royal Queensland Show has been running since 1876 and is full of traditions. Every year, the Ekka showcases the best of Queensland, attracting more than 21,000 competition entries, from woodchop to giant vegetables, beef cattle to dogs, plus award-winning food and much more. We are pleased to announce that several of our beloved competitions, listed below, will continue in 2020. Winners are to be announced on People’s Day Friday 14 August.

BRANDED BEEF AND LAMB
The Royal Queensland Food & Wine Show Branded Beef Competition unearths the nation’s finest beef in the retail market. For a country that adores its red meat and produces some of the finest beef in the world, this competition is a true showcase of the best of the best.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Those with an eye for photography can submit their work in the new Digital Photography Competition.
Exhibitors can enter a range of classes with most mirroring the classes available in last year’s Ekka Photography Competition. There is also a brand-new Ekka Memories class, judged by people’s choice.
The competition also features a Student Photography class that encourages emerging artists to showcase their budding talents and recognises and rewards the next generation of passionate photographers.

eSports: Farming Simulator Challenge
eSports: Farming Simulator Challenge
Ekka in partnership with XP Esports Australia is pleased to announce the Young Farmers XP Esports Cup presented by Arrow Energy. Live at the Ekka Showgrounds, the best regional and city schools will compete using the PC game Farming Simulator 19 to win prize money and trophies for their school’s Esports endeavours.

LED STEER
LED STEER
First Judged in 1979, the Ekka led steer and heifer competition has been rated arguably the best of its kind in Australia. Classes cover both live and carcass categories, a schools competition and an interbreed point score for teams of three. The Led Steer school competitions showcase the next generation of cattle exhibitors and shows the judges why the cattle industry is in safe hands.
For 2020, The RNA will be running the hook component of the competition only.

PADDOCK TO PALATE
PADDOCK TO PALATE
The Paddock to Palate competition presented by JBS Australia is Australia’s richest beef supply chain competition incorporating feedlot weight gain, carcass assessment and MSA eating quality. Almost 1,000 head of cattle enter the Paddock to Palate competition year. Going into its 23rd year, the prize pool is to at almost $60,000.

YOUNG JUDGES
YOUNG JUDGES
The new Virtual Young Judges Competition presented by Arrow Energy gives aspiring judges the opportunity to showcase their budding talents. Exhibitors will partake in the judging process online through a series of images and videos.
The competition features seven categories; Stud Beef, Led Steer, Dairy Cattle, Stud Sheep, Dairy Goats, Horses and Poultry.
Entry is FREE and open to people aged 25 years and under, with the competition featuring a Junior Class for under 15 year-olds and a Senior Class for 15 to 25 year-olds.

BUSH POETRY
BUSH POETRY
The Bush Poetry Competition is going online this year!
Passionate poets from the aspiring to the experienced will record themselves reciting their favourite poem that showcases the Australian way of life. Poets can choose to belt out anything from established bush ballads to their original work in a six-minute video. There are open classes and student classes for established and original poems.
